The Ambassador-designate of Sri Lanka, Nirmala Paranavitana, met with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Addis Ababa, Abdullahi Mohamed Warfa, to discuss bilateral cooperation, with particular emphasis on consular coordination, on a maritime incident involving a Sri Lankan national in connection with the capture of the Oil Tanker HONOUR 25 on 21 April in the Puntland maritime region.
It was noted that the incident occurred in a complex maritime environment, and that information regarding the current status of the vessel and personnel, remains subject to ongoing verification. The Sri Lankan side expressed appreciation for the continued cooperation of Somali authorities and requested further facilitation in engaging relevant institutions to support ongoing efforts aimed at ensuring the safe and timely resolution of the matter. The Somali side reaffirmed its readiness to assist and to facilitate appropriate coordination with relevant national and regional authorities.
The two sides also discussed the importance of strengthened coordination mechanisms between relevant maritime and security institutions. In this context, consideration was given to a possible future technical-high level engagement, to support enhanced communication and cooperation on maritime-related issues.
The Somali side welcomed continued engagement and expressed willingness to facilitate structured communication between relevant stakeholders to support timely and effective coordination.
The meeting concluded in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to continued cooperation on maritime matters and to strengthening bilateral relations through established diplomatic channels.
