The Sri Lanka Embassy in Belgium in collaboration with the BELGOLUX–Sri Lanka Business Council (BLSBC) and with the support of several institutional partners in Belgium, Luxembourg and Sri Lanka, successfully organized the Belgium–Luxembourg (BELGOLUX) Economic Mission to Sri Lanka from 17–21 June 2026, marking a significant milestone in advancing economic cooperation among Sri Lanka, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
The mission brought together a distinguished delegation of nineteen companies from Belgium and Luxembourg, representing a wide range of sectors, including Information & Communications Technology (ICT), energy, manufacturing, financial services, food & beverage, technology, trading and consultancy. Further, officials from the Luxembourg Stock Exchange, Walloon Export & Foreign Investment Agency in Belgium, Ambassador of Belgium to Sri Lanka and Ambassador of Luxembourg to Sri Lanka also joined the mission in Colombo together with the Sri Lanka Ambassador to BELGOLUX and the Minister Commercial of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Brussels.
Over five productive days, participants engaged in an extensive programme featuring business forums, company visits, factory visits, investment promotion activities, expert presentations, networking events, and business-to-business (B2B) matchmaking sessions aimed at strengthening commercial partnerships and exploring new opportunities for trade and investment.
The initiative served as a valuable platform for entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, business chambers, and industry leaders from Sri Lanka and the BELGOLUX region to exchange ideas, build strategic connections, and identify avenues for mutually beneficial collaborations.
A central feature of the mission was the BELGOLUX Economic Forum, held on 19 June 2026 at Port City Colombo, which convened government representatives, diplomatic leaders, business executives, investors, and entrepreneurs for a high-level dialogue on strengthening economic cooperation through trade, investment, and sustainable growth. The forum created an excellent platform for a discussion on enhancing Sri Lanka’s economic partnership with the BELGOLUX region and the wider European Union, while highlighting opportunities for increased collaborations in key growth sectors.
The BELGOLUX-Sri Lanka Business Forum was held on 18 June 2026 at the Hilton Colombo Residences which was organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce together with the Sri Lanka-BENELUX Business Council. A key highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the BELGOLUX–Sri Lanka Business Council and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. The agreement reinforces both organizations' commitment to fostering stronger business relations, promoting bilateral trade and investment, and supporting future commercial cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Belgium–Luxembourg business community.
On 17 June 2026, visit to the United Tobacco Processing (UTP) Pvt Limited factory located at Katunayake Free Trade zone was arranged for the delegation. The UTP (Pvt) Ltd is a well-known Belgian company, invested in Sri Lanka, as a Board of Investment (BOI) company, since 1987. UTP has experienced a substantial growth over the years in Sri Lanka and visit to its factory gave firsthand experience for the BELGOLUX delegation about a true testimonial of longstanding Belgian cooperation with Sri Lanka.
During the mission, delegates also had the opportunity to engage directly with leading Sri Lankan companies and institutions, gaining first-hand insights into the country’s evolving business landscape, export capabilities, and investment potential during various business networking events, company visits, roundtable discussions etc. arranged in Colombo.
The mission further underscored the longstanding friendship and robust economic ties between Sri Lanka, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Through meaningful dialogue, knowledge sharing, and partnership development, the initiative laid a strong foundation for expanded business engagement and sustainable economic growth.
Commenting on the mission's success, organizers noted that the strong participation from the private sector and the productive exchanges throughout the programme reflect the growing interest among Belgian and Luxembourg enterprises in Sri Lanka as a strategic destination for trade, investment, and regional business expansion.
The organizers extend their sincere appreciation to all participating companies, partner institutions, government agencies, and stakeholders whose support contributed to the success of the mission. They look forward to building on the momentum generated through future collaborative initiatives that further strengthen economic relations between Sri Lanka and the BELGOLUX region.
