P.C.: United Nations
Eighty-one years ago, the United Nations was founded on a shared commitment to peace, cooperation and human dignity. Today, amidst complex global challenges, the principles of the UN Charter remain more relevant than ever.
In a world confronted by armed conflicts, climate change, economic uncertainties, pandemics and rapid technological advancement, international cooperation is not merely a choice, but a necessity. No country can overcome these challenges alone.
For over eight decades, the United Nations has remained the principal global platform bringing together member states to promote international peace and security, uphold international law, protect human rights, and advance sustainable development. It is the collective responsibility of member states to advance the multilateral system and ensure that the United Nations remains inclusive and responsive to urgent and evolving needs.
As a responsible Member State of the United Nations since 1955, Sri Lanka remains firmly committed to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including sovereign equality of states, respect for international law, peaceful settlement of disputes and international cooperation. Sri Lanka remains firmly committed to working closely with member states, particularly in advancing the interests of developing countries.
On this United Nations Day, Sri Lanka highlights the collective responsibility of countries to strengthen the United Nations, uphold the values upon which it was founded, and work towards universal peace and prosperity.
