The High Commission of Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Society of Bedfordshire CIC and Stevenage Borough Council, organised “Ayubowan Sri Lanka – Welcome to Paradise” on 18 July 2026 at Event Island, Stevenage Town Centre. Held in conjunction with the 80th anniversary of Stevenage becoming Britain’s first New Town following the Second World War, the event celebrated Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage while reflecting the values of diversity, inclusion and community harmony.

The celebration was attended by the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom, Nimal Senadheera, together with officials of the Mission. Distinguished guests included His Majesty’s Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Enoch Kanagaraj; the Mayor of Stevenage, Councillor Lloyd Briscoe; Kevin Bonavia, Member of Parliament for Stevenage; Chief Superintendent Luke Mooney of Hertfordshire Constabulary; and representatives of Stevenage Borough Council.

Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Senadheera highlighted the importance of cultural initiatives in strengthening people-to-people connections between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, while promoting Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, tourism potential, trade, and investment opportunities. The distinguished guests commended the event as an excellent example of cultural exchange and community engagement, recognising the contribution of the Sri Lankan community to the multicultural fabric of British society.

The programme featured traditional Kandyan and Low Country dances, contemporary performances, and live music. Most of the cultural performances were presented voluntarily by Sri Lankan cultural organisations and dance companies based in the United Kingdom, showing their commitment to preserving and promoting Sri Lankan heritage overseas. Visitors also enjoyed Sri Lankan cuisine, cultural and trade stalls, and tourism displays. The High Commission of Sri Lanka stall featured a tourism promotion display and a Ceylon Tea tasting stall, where Suranga James Perera, Executive Director of the International Tea Committee, Professional Tea Taster and Tea Master at the UK Tea Academy, showcased the art of Ceylon Tea through demonstrations and tasting sessions, with complimentary Ceylon Tea served to visitors.

Sri Lanka Day concluded with a vibrant musical evening, bringing together the Sri Lankan community and the wider public in a celebration of friendship, culture and unity.
