Sri Lanka Consulate General in Milan Hosts Hajj Celebration for Sri Lankan Muslim Community in Northern Italy

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Milan organized a Hajj celebration on 05 June 2026, bringing together members of the Sri Lankan Muslim community from across Northern Italy to commemorate the spiritual significance of Hajj and strengthen community bonds. The event began with Islamic religious observances, including recitation of the Holy Qur’an, setting a solemn and spiritual tone for the evening.

 

In his welcome remarks, Consul General Dulmith Waruna highlighted the importance of Hajj in Islam and commended the Sri Lankan Muslim community in Italy for preserving their cultural and religious heritage while contributing to Italian society and the development of the Motherland. He reaffirmed the Consulate’s commitment to supporting the cultural and social initiatives of the community.

 

The programme featured two cultural performances by the children of Sri Lanka Muslim Society in Italy that reflect the rich Islamic heritage of Sri Lanka. The performances were warmly received by the audience and underscored the intergenerational transmission of cultural values.

 

In his address, President of the Sri Lanka Muslim Society in Italy, A.R. Mohammed Muneer, expressed appreciation to the Consulate General for hosting the event and emphasized the role of such gatherings in fostering unity, faith, and solidarity among the diaspora. He also acknowledged the community’s ongoing efforts to promote mutual understanding and cooperation within the broader Italian society.

 

Following his remarks, Muneer presented a token of appreciation to Consul General Dulmith Waruna on behalf of the Sri Lanka Muslim Society in Italy, in recognition of the Consulate’s continued support and engagement with the community.

 

Consul Dilini Jayawardhana delivered the Vote of Thanks, extending gratitude to the Sri Lanka Muslim Society in Italy, the performers, and all attendees for their participation. She also recognized the Consulate staff for their dedication in organizing the event.

 

The celebration concluded with a traditional Sri Lankan dinner, offering guests an opportunity to share fellowship and enjoy authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. The event was attended by a cross-section of the Sri Lankan Muslim community in Northern Italy and the staff of the Consulate General and their families.
