The Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Yangon, upon the invitation of the Board of Trustees, participated in a religious and cultural programme featuring a Waso Dana and Robe Offering and a certificate presentation ceremony for Venerable monks who successfully completed the Myanmar Government “Pahtamabyan” examination. The event was held on Sunday, 9 August 2026, at the renowned Pa-Auk Taw Ya (Htauk Kyant) Buddhist Academic and Meditation Institute in Yangon.

The event was attended by Mrs. Prabashini Ponnamperuma, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar, together with officials and staff of the Embassy and a group of Sri Lankan pilgrims. The participation of the Embassy formed part of its continued efforts to strengthen the longstanding cultural, religious and people-to-people relations between Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

The Embassy participated in a full-day programme of religious observances, including the offering of Dhāwala Dānaya (midday alms), the Waso Robe Offering Ceremony, and the offering of other religious requisites and Pūjā items to approximately 252 Venerable monks residing at the Pa-Auk Taw Ya International Buddhist Meditation Centre – Pa-Auk Taw Ya Branch, Hmwe Bi Township, Yangon.

The programme was conducted under the guidance and blessings of the Chief Venerable Thero, the Most Ven.  Kavisāra, the Head of the Buddhist Academic and Meditation Institute, and was organized by the Board of Trustees. A Dhamma sermon was also delivered as part of the religious programme, providing an opportunity for devotees to cultivate merit and reflect upon the teachings of the Buddha. The observance further underscored the enduring spiritual and religious bonds shared by the peoples of Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

During the programme, Ven. Dhiradhammā Lankāra, a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk currently residing at the monastery and engaged in teaching Buddhism, was also honored for his achievement in successfully completing the Intermediate Level of the Myanmar Government “Pahtamabyan” examination. On this occasion, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar, presented the relevant certificate to Ven. Dhiradhammā Lankāra, recognizing his successful completion of the examination. The presentation also served as a special gesture of recognition extended to the Sri Lankan monk, among the invited guests participating in the ceremony.

The participation of the Embassy in this significant religious observance reflects the deep-rooted Buddhist heritage shared by Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon remains committed to actively supporting and participating in significant religious and cultural events in Myanmar that promote cultural diplomacy, religious understanding, people-to-people contacts and mutual respect, while further strengthening the historic friendship and close religious ties between Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
