The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beirut successfully conducted a Special Community Awareness Programme for Sri Lankan Migrant Workers in Lebanon on 13 September 2026 at Hazmieh City Hall, with the participation of over 700 members of the Sri Lankan community in Lebanon.

Held under the theme “Together for a Stronger Sri Lankan Community in Lebanon,” the Programme represented the first comprehensive community awareness initiative of its kind organised by the Embassy in Lebanon. It was designed to strengthen the Embassy’s direct engagement with Sri Lankan migrant workers and enhance awareness of key consular, employment and welfare matters affecting the community.

The Programme comprised awareness sessions on consular services provided by the Embassy, registration and benefits under the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), and the rights and responsibilities of Sri Lankan migrant workers. Participants received practical guidance on accessing consular and welfare assistance, maintaining proper documentation, complying with the laws and regulations of the host country, and seeking assistance through appropriate official channels in cases of employment or welfare-related difficulties. The Programme also included an open discussion on concerns, grievances and suggestions raised by migrant workers.

A key feature of the event was an interactive question-and-answer session, which provided community members with an opportunity to engage directly with Embassy officials, seek clarification and share suggestions. The active participation of attendees enabled constructive dialogue and provided the Embassy with valuable insights into the issues facing Sri Lankan migrant workers in Lebanon.

The awareness sessions were complemented by Sri Lankan cultural performances and entertainment, while refreshments were served to participants, fostering greater interaction among community members.

The Embassy was honoured by the presence and generous support of the Mayor of Hazmieh and members of the Municipal Council. The Hazmieh Municipality provided the City Hall free of charge, contributing significantly to the successful conduct of the event. The Embassy expressed its sincere appreciation to the Mayor and the Municipal Council for their goodwill and continued support for the Sri Lankan community in Lebanon.

The Embassy also acknowledged with gratitude the generous contributions of two members of the Sri Lankan community who sponsored the stage arrangements and provided food items in support of the Programme.

The high turnout and positive response from the community underscored the importance of sustained outreach and direct engagement with Sri Lankan migrant workers. The Embassy remains committed to promoting the welfare and interests of Sri Lankan nationals in Lebanon, improving access to consular and foreign employment-related information, and strengthening unity, communication and cooperation within the Sri Lankan community.
