The Sri Lanka Embassy in Belgium organized a special Ceylon Tea tasting event on 27 August 2026 in Antwerp for tea enthusiasts among the members of the Inner Wheel Club in Belgium.

The programme commenced with special remarks by Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Belgium, Chandana Weerasena, who highlighted the importance of promoting Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and culinary heritage and strengthening people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and Belgium. He invited the participants to visit Sri Lanka to experience the essence of the island.

Minister (Commercial) of the Embassy, Thavishya Mullegamgoda, delivered a presentation on Ceylon Tea, covering its history, distinctive characteristics and varieties. The presentation also introduced Sri Lanka’s seven renowned tea-growing regions, the tea production process and the factors contributing to the uniqueness of Ceylon Tea. She also highlighted the tea trails in Sri Lanka, generating enthusiasm among the participants to visit the country and experience the story and adventure associated with Ceylon Tea.

A highlight of the programme was the tea-tasting session conducted by the Embassy, during which participants had the opportunity to experience five varieties of Ceylon Tea, including black, green and flavoured teas, as well as a refreshing mocktail prepared with Ceylon green tea. The session enabled participants to explore the distinctive flavours and aromas of different varieties of Ceylon Tea.

Participants also took part in a short Ceylon Tea quiz, with three winners receiving Ceylon Tea and Sri Lanka tourism-themed gifts as souvenirs. The programme concluded with an introduction to authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, featuring a selection of traditional Sri Lankan dishes.

The Embassy’s engagement with the Inner Wheel Club in Belgium was facilitated by Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in the Antwerp Region, Monique De Decker-Deprez, who helped establish a valuable connection between the Embassy and the Club. Inner Wheel Belgium-Luxembourg is a prominent branch of International Inner Wheel, the world’s largest women’s service organization. The event brought together members of the Inner Wheel Club with a particular interest in discovering the heritage of Ceylon Tea.

Through interactive programmes such as tea tastings and workshops, the Embassy continues to create opportunities for Belgian consumers to discover the quality and diversity of Ceylon Tea, as well as Sri Lanka’s rich traditions and heritage.
