The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brussels celebrated the Day of Vesak on 17 May 2026 at the Sri Lanka residence with the participation of Venerable Buddhist monks and the Sri Lankan community in Belgium and Luxembourg.

While highlighting the spirituality of this ‘Day of Vesak’ as the most sacred festival for Buddhists commemorating the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Lord Buddha, the Most Venerable Kurunagala Ananda Gosha Thero from ‘Mahamevna’ Buddhist Monastery in the Netherlands, and Chief Incumbent of the Thai Dhammarama Temple in Belgium Venerable Wisuddhi Chotipratoom Thero conducted the Vesak religious programme which consisted of  Buddha Vandana, Dhamma Sermon, and a meditation session on ‘Meththa’.

Ambassador Chandana Weerasena, highlighted Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage and its leadership role in bringing forward the 1999 UN resolution on the recognition of Vesak, a day of special significance to Buddhists all over the world, as a UN day of observance.

For the 6th consecutive time the Embassy staff sang Buddhist devotional songs followed by several other devotional song performances by the Sri Lankan community in Belgium. The Sri Lanka Residence premises decorated with traditional Vesak lanterns and Buddhist flags added colour to the event.

The proceedings concluded with the offering of ‘Gilanpasa’ and ‘Pirikara’ to the venerable Maha Sangha and a traditional Sri Lankan dinner to the invitees.
