Anniversary Celebration of 69th Independence Day on 4th February 2017

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka celebrated the 69th Anniversary of Independence Day of Sri Lanka in Los Angeles on 4th February 2017 which was attended by around 500 participants representing among other, Sri Lankan American community living in Los Angeles. The celebration was held at the official residence of the Consul General. Hon. Karunarathna Paranawithana, Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media who was on an official visit to USA was also attended at the event as one of the guests of honor.

The event was represented, during the religious observances, by a number of Buddhist Temples, the Hindu Temple. Christian and the Islamic religious institutions. The Los Angeles Consular Corps, the US Government institutions, semi-government institutions, the city officials including the County of Los Angeles, Defense institutions, civic organizations and other community organizations deputed representatives to grace the occasion.

The celebration commenced with hoisting the National Flag by Consul General Swarna Gunarante which was followed by singing the National Anthem both in Sinhala and Tamil, singing the National Anthem of USA, and lighting of the traditional oil lamp. Two minutes’ silence was observed in remembrance of all who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. Multi religious observances were conducted by the Buddhist and Hindu priests, and other religious leaders of Christian and Islam by invoking blessings to the gathering and the people of Sri Lanka.

The National day messages of H.E. the President, the Hon. Prime Minister and the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs were read in Sinhala, English and Tamil languages by the Consul General Swarna Gunaratne, Deputy Consul General Asoka B Godawita, and President of Sri Lanka Tamil Association Nandakumaran Navaratnam, respectively.

The Consul General at her address to the gathering highlighted the current developments and opportunities in the trade and economic spheres for the business community. The Consul General also cordially invited the Sri Lankan expatriate community to make use of the opportunity of utilizing the economic potentials in Sri Lanka for the future progress and achieve win-win business community.

The guests were provided refreshments arranged by the Consulate General with the support of the Sri Lankan community organizations. A short cultural performance was organized at the conclusion of the event.
