0012

The 69th Independence Day of Sri Lanka was celebrated at the Embassy on 4th February 2017 in Cairo.  This also marked the 60th year of establishing diplomatic relations between Egypt and Sri Lanka.

The programme commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka, H.E. Ramiah Yogarajan to the accompaniment of “Magul Bera’ in the presence of a large number of Sri Lankans and well-wishers.  The National Anthem was sung in Sinhala and Tamil, followed by the National Anthem of the host country.  Two minutes silence was observed in remembrance of all Sri Lankans who had sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

The lighting of the traditional oil lamp was done by the Ambassador, Embassy staff and members of the Sri Lankan community.  The messages of His Excellency the President, Honourable Prime Minister and Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs were read out in both the Sinhala and Tamil languages.

Ambassador, Ramiah Yogarajan in his speech mentioned that the Government of Sri Lanka is presently working according to a plan for development of the country and creation of employment opportunities for the youth.  And it is through the cooperation of all people that development can be achieved.  The Government is attending to the reconciliation, addressing issues of the minorities but certain politically motivated persons are calling for a change of Government.  However, it is only by cooperation with the Government that has plans for industrial development and FDIs by China, India, Japan and Singapore that more industries could be created and more jobs and opportunities could be given to the youth.  In this regard, the cooperation of all people in the country is essential and we urge all people to work towards the positive development of our country.

Singing of patriotic songs by the members of community was staged along with a dance performance by Sri Lankan children and an instrumental musical performance on the saxophone by Madam Mandara Yogarajan.  The guests were hosted to a sumptuous lunch by the Ambassador.

A public function for the diplomatic community and general public of Egypt was held at the Nile Ritz Carlton Hotel. A large number of diplomats, importers, exporters, travel agents, tour operators attended the function.

The programme started with the rendering of patriotic music by the members of the Sri Lankan community in Egypt and Mrs. Shiwanthi Abeyrathne of the Embassy led by Mr. Asitha Chandrasena.  The musical programme was interspersed with two dance items by Sri Lankan children living in Egypt. This was followed by an instrumental performance by Mrs. Mandara Yogarajan.  Following the cultural performances, the national anthem of Egypt and Sri Lanka were played.  The national anthem was played in both Sinhala and Tamil languages.  This was followed by an address by the Ambassador and was replied to by Ambassador Yasser Mourad, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs who hailed the close relations since Independence and the cooperation since founding of the Non Aligned Movement also mentioned the honouring of the Egyptian freedom fighter Orabi Pasha by Sri Lanka naming a street after him and establishing a museum.  Dinner was served including Sri Lankan dishes for all the guests.
