lk8

The Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute (LKIIRSS) had its first interaction between young politicians and researchers on Wednesday, the 6th of July 2014 at the boardroom of the LKIIRSS. The Kadirgamar Institute stated its intention in engaging in research, sharing its findings with policy makers and advising them, having realized the importance of bridging the gap between researchers and policy makers. This was reiterated in the sentiments of Hon. Namal Rajapakse who stated; “We need to develop research in our country. It is important to take research input for policy formulation in our country.”

The purpose of the interaction was to advise Members of the Parliament and Provincial Council members on policy direction regarding youth empowerment in Sri Lanka. The presentation was conducted by LKIIRSS Executive Director, Asanga Abeyagoonasekera alongside the research staff of the institute, highlighting the challenges faced by the youth globally and in Sri Lanka, with a specific focus on health, education, international participation of youth, employment and gender equality. Ms. Aranya Rajasingam, Program officer at the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies made an insightful presentation on the challenges facing by the youth in Sri Lanka, and provided a critical evaluation of the problems they face in carrying out youth empowerment programs. Ms. Salma Yusuf, a Resource Person at LKIIRSS also contributed to the discussion from the viewpoint of rehabilitation and the situation of youth in a post conflict society. The MPs and Provincial Council Members in attendance appreciated the work of the Kadirgamar Institute and commended the new initiative which they deemed to be helpful in policy formulation in the future, as it would bridge the gap between researchers and policy officers.

The Kadirgamar Institute plans to continue this program by hosting interactions between the institute and members of the government every month on important subjects.
