Sweden–Sri Lanka Virtual Workshop showcases investment opportunities in Sri Lanka to leading Swedish businesses

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm, together with Business Sweden, organized the Sweden–Sri Lanka Virtual Workshop to promote investment opportunities in Sri Lanka to Swedish companies. The Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Chathuranga Abeysinghe, delivered the keynote address to over 25 leading Swedish companies representing diverse sectors, including Hitachi Energy, ICA, Tetra Pak, SAAB, Freja eID, Candela, and IBM. Officials of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka and the Export Development Board also participated in the workshop.

In his remarks, the Deputy Minister highlighted recent structural reforms and policy initiatives undertaken by the Government to further improve Sri Lanka’s investment environment. He also shared information on updated visa schemes for investors and land reforms for industrial development. The Government’s efforts to improve service delivery through digital transformation were also highlighted. The Deputy Minister identified the marine, fisheries, value-added agriculture, electrical and electronic manufacturing, and value-added mineral sectors as areas with significant potential for foreign investment.

The workshop was also addressed by the Trade and Invest Commissioner of Sweden to Sri Lanka, Sofia Högman; the Ambassador of Sweden to Sri Lanka, Jan Thesleff; the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Sweden, Kapila Fonseka; and the Honorary Consul General of Sweden to Sri Lanka, Sanjay Kulatunga. The speakers expressed their commitment to strengthening business and investment relations between the two countries and reaffirmed the readiness of their respective institutions to work closely together.

The Market Manager of Business Sweden in New Delhi, Pawan Tahlani, presented an overview of Sweden–Sri Lanka trade relations, past collaborations, and planned activities. His presentation also provided an overview of Sri Lanka’s investment landscape, highlighting the presence of over 30 Swedish companies already operating in Sri Lanka.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm and Business Sweden plan to facilitate an investor delegation from Sweden to Sri Lanka in January 2027, in conjunction with Sri Lanka Expo 2027 scheduled to be held in Colombo from 14–17 January 2027. A virtual business matchmaking session is also planned for October 2026 in preparation for the investor delegation visit.
