The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon, Myanmar, celebrated Vesak religious observances on 30 May 2026 at the Embassy premises, commemorating the Birth, Enlightenment, and Passing Away of Lord Buddha. The event was attended by the staff of the Embassy and their family members, members of the Sri Lankan community residing in Myanmar, friends of Sri Lanka, and well-wishers.
The religious observances commenced in a serene and devotional atmosphere with the lighting of Vesak lanterns and oil lamps, followed by the offering of flowers at the sacred Bo tree and other devotional sites within the Embassy premises by devotees and participants. The Embassy premises were beautifully illuminated and adorned with Vesak lanterns, Buddhist flags, and devotional decorations, arranged by members of the Sri Lankan community, reflecting the spirit and traditions of Vesak, as celebrated in Sri Lanka.
A Buddha Pooja and Pahan Pooja ceremony, together with Seth Pirith chanting, were conducted by Venerable Vijaya (Mahasaddhamma Jotikadhaja) Thero, (of Myanmar) along with Venerable Kolitha Thero and Venerable Dhammika Thero of Pa Thein Monastery, Eain Taw Yar Compound, Dagon Township, Yangon. A Dharma Sermon (Dharma Deshana) was delivered by Venerable Dhira Dhamma Lankara Thero (Sri Lankan) of Pa-Auk Taw Ya Institute, Htauk Kyant Township, Yangon, emphasizing the timeless teachings of Lord Buddha on righteous conduct, mental discipline, and the cultivation of a compassionate and harmonious way of life. Blessings were invoked for peace, harmony, prosperity, and well-being of the peoples of Sri Lanka and Myanmar, as well as for all sentient beings.
The programme concluded with fellowship among the participants and the sharing of a light meal in a warm and cordial atmosphere, further strengthening the bonds of friendship and community spirit among those present.
