The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Cairo, together with the Sri Lankan community in Egypt, celebrated Vesak Day on 30 May 2026 at the Embassy premises through a series of Amisa and Prathipatti Pooja observances conducted throughout the day.
The Vesak Day programme commenced with emphasis on Prathipatti Pooja activities, including the observance of Sil by community members, meditation sessions, Dharma Deshana, Dharma Sakachcha, and Pirith chanting, conducted under the spiritual guidance of Venerable Andaulpatha Seelavansa Thero, who specially travelled from Sri Lanka for the Vesak celebrations in Cairo.
The Embassy premises were illuminated with Vesak lanterns and decorative displays overnight, while a Bhakti Gee programme performed by members of the Sri Lankan community and children added a cultural and devotional dimension to the celebrations. In the spirit of Vesak and its emphasis on generosity and sharing, a Dansala was also organized at the Embassy premises, offering refreshments to passers-by and meals to participants attending the event.
As part of the commemorations, an almsgiving ceremony was held at the Sri Lanka Residence for Venerable Andaulpatha Seelavansa Thero, with the participation of Embassy staff and their families, who received blessings on this sacred occasion.
The Vesak Day programme, held in Cairo after several years, became a memorable occasion for the Sri Lankan community in Egypt. It brought together Sri Lankans of diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds in a spirit of devotion and communion, strengthening communal ties and reaffirming shared cultural and spiritual heritage.
