The Consul General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, Priyanga Wickramasinghe, called on the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Rahul Narwekar, on 20 May 2026.

The meeting focused on the longstanding historical, cultural, and economic ties between Sri Lanka and the State of Maharashtra, while exploring opportunities to further strengthen cooperation.

During the discussion, the Speaker and the Consul General exchanged views on enhancing parliamentary engagement, including potential study visits and interactions between legislators of Sri Lanka and the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

The Consul General highlighted recent economic engagements between Sri Lanka and India, including the successful visit of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce to Mumbai and its interactions with the Confederation of Indian Industry and other Mumbai-based business chambers earlier in May. These engagements reflected growing investor interest in Sri Lanka’s emerging sectors, including renewable energy, information and communication technology, logistics, and digital transformation.

The discussions also focused on opportunities to enhance cultural tourism and people-to-people connectivity through shared civilizational links, including the Buddhist Circuit and the Ramayana Trail. The potential to promote Sri Lanka as a destination for film production, MICE tourism, and destination weddings for travellers from Maharashtra was also discussed.

The Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Rahul Narwekar, and the Consul General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, Priyanga Wickramasinghe, reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close engagement and strengthening commercial, institutional, and cultural partnerships, as well as people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and India.
